Learning Outcomes

As English majors our students:

• Learn about the changing nature of literary, linguistic, and textual practices across different periods and cultures.
• Study the historical dimensions of literature, film, and writing: how texts and writers borrow, innovate, and transform literary and visual traditions.
• Learn to read critically by developing the techniques of close reading and textual analysis in print and digital media.
• Develop an understanding of the cultural and historical factors that define literary and filmic texts.
• Develop their ability to write for different audiences and with various purposes within a range of contexts and media that include audio, visual, and print texts.
• Develop their ability to conduct primary and secondary research, identifying, selecting, managing, and documenting appropriate technologies and materials.
• Develop their ability to communicate orally, in discussion and through presentation, so as to increase knowledge, to foster understanding, and to promote change in the listeners’ attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors.
