  Foreignness in German literature

  Proposal

  We will work together on a new project continuing my research into foreignness in German literature.  Looking at the popular literary magazine Literaturen to identify patterns of representing foreign authors, we will pay special attention to the differences between authors published elsewhere and translated into German and those writing in German.  We will then compare our findings from the magazine with the German authors’ self-representations found on their websites and in interviews.  The student will develop her skills in reception research as we analyze the expectations facing “not quite German” authors.
