Proposal
I would like to work with a Wheaton Research Partnership student on assisting with the implementation and coordination of the Film and New Media Studies major. Specifically, I am interested in working with a student who has computing skills in some or most of the following areas:
- Microsoft Excel
- FileMaker Pro or SQL
- informatics
- HTML and CSS
- Perl
- Flash
- API
Having a WRP student assistant who is knowledgeable in these areas would provide technology valuable support for the FNMS program. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, the WRP student and I would have much to learn from one another. The WRP student would be able to help me increase my own technological proficiency, while I would be able to help mentor him/her with respect to factors – academic, institutional, budgetary, cultural, etc. – that circumscribe the sort of computing ‘solutions’ available to us, thus providing an opportunity for the student to put his/her expertise to use in a more ‘real-world’ setting.
As the FNMS program gets off the ground this year, there are sure to be many occasions when it will be necessary to collect, distribute and interpret a wide range of information in order to help assure that the program’s first year is as smooth and successful as possible. A WRP assistant would be able to provide crucial program support in both short- and long-term ways. In the short-term, he/she would be able to assist in maintaining the program’s web page, as well as in the use of social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter to promote FNMS and to share information about events, programs and courses pertaining to the major. With respect to longer-term issues, I would like to work with the student to develop effective tools for collecting and interpreting data relating to various aspects of the program, e.g., course offerings, advising, JYA programs, summer internships, advising, alumnae/i networking, etc.
Academic year: 2011-2012
