Multi-Lingual Support
If English isn't your first language, you can find support for your reading and writing with any of our Writing Associates, including our ESL specialist Ruth Foley(E-mail: foley_ruth@wheatoncollege.edu).
Professor Foley works with multi-lingual students. This group includes immigrants and refugees, or their families, as well as international students. Even if you have lived in the United States for many years, it is still quite possible that you will need support with college English.
The support services for multi-lingual students take several forms:
Individual Tutoring
Writing Associates tutor students at every level of ability and every stage of the writing process. Multi-lingual students are encouraged to make appointments with Professor Foley.
In addition to helping with writing projects, Professor Foley works with students to reinforce and develop skills in grammar, syntax, vocabulary, idioms, etc. Some students schedule meetings once a week or twice a month, while others focus on particular assignments.
Students may meet with peer tutors at the Kollett Center, too.
Specialized Class for Non-Native Speakers
If you're seeking a writing class designed specifically for non-native speakers, then you should enroll in English 060, Writing for Multilingual (ESL) Students.
English 060 is a year-long course designed to help non-native speakers of English to gain the knowledge, skills, and practice necessary to succeed at college writing. The curriculum addresses ESL issues: grammar, syntax, vocabulary, idioms, cultural understanding, the expectations of U.S. professors, etc.
The two-semester sequence, taken concurrently with English 101, fulfills both the First-Year Writing requirement and the Foreign Language requirement for students who have placed into the sequence. Students receive .5 credit per semester, and 1 credit for the year. Students who have already completed English 101 are also welcome to register for English 060.
