The Basic Toolbar in the new editor

You will see that the template looks similar to what you were using before with some new tools added in. You will the see Page title, crumb, review cycle, keywords, etc. at the top of your page. You will also see the body of the page where you can type text. You will now see two rows of icons at the top of the grayed section to manipulate your text.

These icons will allow you to change the way the text appears, change the position of your text, create lists, create tables and link to other pages. You will also be able to insert pictures find and replace text and insert custom characters such as a copyright symbol.

We will cover these icons in more depth in the following lessons.

Tool Bar- Emphasizing Text

The first two icons on the tool bar allow you to bold text and italicize text. Highlight the text you would like to change and then click on the B for bold or I for italic. Keep in mind that you do not want to use this tool too often. The emphasis will not be as effective if overused. Bold and italicize only when it is absolutely necessary to do so.

 Tool Bar- Lists

The next icons on the basic toolbar row are helpful when creating lists or to organize text. One allows you to create a bulleted list while the other allows you to number sequences of text. Again, you do not want to overuse this tool but it can be extremely helpful in giving directions or drawing attention to several items that are related in some way.

Tool Bar- Positioning Text/Alignment

The icons above allow you to move and position your text on the page. You can indent or out dent a paragraph. You can also left justify or right justify your text. Select your text and then click on an icon to reposition it. Keep in mind that text should almost always be left justified.

Tool Bar- Links

These icons (resembling a chain link and a broken chain link) literally allow you to insert a link to another page or document. This is helpful when you are referencing another page or document in your writing and you want the reader to be able to click on a url and go to the page you are referring to.

For further information, visit our job aid on linking here.

Tool Bar- Anchor

If you have a lot of text on a page you are linking to sometimes you like to give your reader the chance to move directly to a specific section of that page. To do this, go to the section of the target page you would like to be able to bring your reader to and click on the anchor icon. Type in a short and easy name for the anchor and then copy the name (highlight it with your mouse and hold down the Control key plus the letter C). Click "insert" and then "save and publish the page". Then go to the page where you are linking from and click on the word that you set up as a link. Click on the link button. At the end of the url you already entered (when you set up the link) type the pound sign (#) and paste the name of your anchor.  We recommend that you review the screencast on how to use anchors.

Tool Bar- Insert Picture

Inserting a picture is now easier thanks to the insert picture icon. You must use FTP to place your picture on the server as before but now instead of having to use HTML code in the web editor you simply click on the picture icon and insert the link you copied from FTP (or you can figure out where you placed it and type in the link accordingly (see Example below). Image files should be saved in the "Images" folder in your top-level folder on the web server.

Example: The web strategy group places images in our "images" section in our "Web" Folder. Therefore, if we needed to reference a picture called "Toolbar.jpg" the path would be /web/images/toolbar.jpg

Tool Bar-Insert Custom Character

This icon lets you insert characters such as the copyright symbol, arrows and other symbols that may not be found on your keyboard.
