  • Cowduck takes a sip from Peacock Pond

    How Cowduck got her name

    Few perhaps, aside from Joel Relihan, Associate Provost and Professor of Classics, recall how Cowduck came to be named Cowduck.  Joel referred me to Francoise Rosset, Assoc. Professor of Russian, who shares the following story:

    "The story is that Pierre-Andre Houpert, Class of 2010, came up with the name. He wasn't even in high school then...just a faculty kid living on campus. Back then, some time around 2001, Pierre-Andre used to occasionally come to Russian club events with me. He found my students terribly cool and some of them had adopted him as a little brother. Pierre-Andre remembers clearly that my student "Chum," Anh-Tram Tran, Class of 2003, was there when Cowduck was named. They had a silly conversation about fictitious "cults of rubber duckies," and decided that the campus ducks were emissaries of The Great Duck. In the process, Pierre-Andre said this one duck had "spots like a cow" therefore she was "cow-duck!" Pierre-Andre now says he was trying to show how funny and clever he was to the cool students. Chum circulated the name to other students, and as far as anyone knows, that's how Cowduck got her name!"

    Thank you, Francoise, for sharing a story that needed to be told.  And thank you, Pierre-Andre, for giving "Cowduck" a name to remember!

    Mystery Photo: What is it?

    Staff Council presents a new challenge of what it is, as opposed to previous challenges of where is it! If you can name the object in the mystery photo at left, than submit your answer to staff news at: snews@wheatoncollege.edu 

    The first to correctly identify the object will receive an equally mysterious prize! Hint: photo submitted by Jane Young

    Last month's mystery photo was correctly identified by Kristen Turcotte, Becky Ebeling, Lora Sharpe, and Barbara Cole as the window on the third floor of Park Hall.

    Lunch-time is fun time for the kids

    ...and for Dad too!

    David Laferriere, Graphic Designer in the Communications office, has been drawing on his two son's sandwich bags since May of 2008. Some blogs have featured his sandwich bags over the years. Recently, David's artwork has been featured on a few high-profile web sites like Gizmodo and Flickr and featured locally in the Attleboro Patch News.

  • Wheaton FiberSpace

    Wheaton's new FiberSpace

    Science Center room 233 is now home to the FiberSpace. A collaboration between the WHALE lab, which promotes creativity and collaboration, and the student run Knitting Club, the FiberSpace has yarn, sewing machines, conductive thread, and other textiles. With both traditional materials and high-tech items, the space strives to connect traditional fiber arts with technology. The space is open to students, faculty, and staff for creative projects. Bring your skills, creativity, or just an interest in learning more.

    Donations of yarn, fabric, or books for the space are more than welcome. If you are interested in using the space or equipment for a project please contact Tom Armstrong or Lauren Slingluff and they will arrange access for you.

  • United Regional Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Opportunity

    Applications are now being accepted for The United Regional Chamber of Commerce's college scholarships. Several $1,000 and $500 scholarships will be distributed through the Chamber. Applicants must be the son or daughter of an employee of a Chamber-member business, be a high school senior who has applied to an accredited four-year college, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and perform uncompensated community service. Completed applications must be received by April 15.

  • Wheaton College 2013 Varsity Swim Team

    Wheaton's Synchronized Charity Show, Be Your Own Super Hero

    Hello Wheaton Community,

    I am a captain of Wheaton Varsity Synchronized Swimming team and I wanted to let everyone know about the upcoming Annual Wheaton Synchro Charity Show. It will be held Saturday, April 6th at 7PM in the Haas Athletic Center Natatorium. This year's theme is called "Be Your Own Super Hero." We will be supporting a campaign that promotes healthy body images for women called "Healthy is the New Skinny."

    Our goal as a team is to live our lives as healthy as we can and make sure that we love ourselves so we can grow and prosper into happy and successful women. We are happy to support this program and we hope to spread this awareness to others across campus and to local middle/high school synchronized swimming teams who we hope to have join us at this event.

    We will have a great show including the routines that Wheaton Synchro competed with at the Collegiate National Championships at Standard University this March and some new routines that we wold like to share. Along with our program we will be having a volunteer routine in which students from campus will join us and learn a basic synchronized swimming routine that they can show to their fellow peers. It should be a lot of fun and will help to bring awareness for promoting healthy body images to the Wheaton Community. Please come join us!

    2nd Annual John Mitchell Memorial Race

  • All Staff gift card winners

    March 2013 Spring All-Staff meeting

    Staff were greeted at the door by Staff Council members handing out raffle tickets for a chance to win a gift card or one of the many prizes.  The Spring All-Staff meeting opened with a presentation by Sue Wawrzaszek, Sue Morgado, and Jessie Durand providing a timely demonstration about the transition to Google calendar.     Scott Hamlin presented preliminary results of the staff survey on behalf of the Employee Environment Committee.  EEC members are pleased with the high survey response rate, and will continue to work on compiling all responses into a final report to be shared at a later date.  After a brief discussion, staff conveyed appreciation to members of EEC for the work that they are doing on the survey and on behalf of all staff.

    Communication Committee members Michelle Monti and Bernice Morrissey provided an overview of the Staff Council web pages, focusing attention on the staff news web form which is the best tool for staff and faculty to submit stories to the Staff Newsletter.

    Many thanks to participants and to Staff Council Co-chairs Gary Arhendts and Judi Razee,'08 for facilitating, and to the President's office for providing coffee and muffins. Special thanks to Judi who made the gift cards and prizes possible.

  • Winning ticket holder Abby Earle

    And the winner is?

    The winning ticket was drawn and the ticket number called for the first of many great prizes at the March 2013 All Staff meeting. After a long silence in the auditorium, no one claimed to have the ticket. After a few awkward moments, Abby Earle, Class of 2012 and now a Wheaton staff member, realized that she had not checked her ticket as she was busy helping out with the raffle prizes. Sure enough, Abby's ticket was the winner.

    Congratulations Abby! And thanks for helping to making the March All-Staff meeting a fun and successful meeting!
