Building community one piece at a time

Posted on March 26, 2013

During certain times of the year a jigsaw puzzle appears in the Hood Café. Without any prompting, staff and students will sit for a few moments and begin to find matching pieces. Each day the image becomes clearer until finally it’s complete!

The Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL) Office first began offering puzzles in their main office and noticed a positive effect on students. Students were able to relax and be more focused before entering their meetings with staff. It was during CORE August 2011 (also known as hurricane Irene) when SAIL moved the puzzle to the Hood Café. Since then, the Puzzle Table has appeared throughout the academic year, specifically during times of high stress for students.

The Puzzle Table is also considered a simple and fun opportunity for community engagement. In addition, there is an underlying message of when we working together, we can accomplish great things. SAIL is looking for more puzzles to continue this great program. If you have one you wish to donate, please drop it off at the SAIL front office, above the Hood Café.
