Selecting An Advisor

Having a staff/faculty member simply agree to serve as your advisor is not harnessing the contributions that they might offer your organization. It is important for student group to select staff/faculty members who will help the organization meet its goals and provide guidance along the way.

Each year, you should determine what role your advisor will have for the upcoming academic year. The best place to being your search is by a department search. Using the goals and vision of your club, speak to various staff/faculty and narrow down your search. Once you feel you have found your advisor, have a conversation with your advisor about the expectations. You may find that a faculty/staff member will have their own expectations for the group or for the role they are willing to play.

This relationship is a two-way street and both advisor and the student organization should ensure that they are well matched for one another and if not, to find a more appropriate fit.
