Women's Rugby wraps up their most successful season ever
Posted on November 1, 2011
The Wheaton Women's Rugby team has took the NEWCRC Conference by storm this year by going undefeated during the regular season but coming up 3 points short of their first league title. Despite not winning the conference, the 2011 Women's Rugby Club was the most successful team in the school's long history of women's rugby
Entering the season facing the issues of who would replace the graduated seniors and leaders from the previous season, the team put those concerns to rest after winning the DIII Bean Town Tournament in the beginning of the season. Despite injuries throughout the year and some changes in the starting line-up, this success continued as the team rattled off consecutive wins throughout the year and averaged close to 50 points per contest while limiting their opponents to less than 30 points combined during the regular season. Finishing their regular season undefeated, the Wheaton Lyons, behind the superb play from starters and strong contributions from their bend, headed to the playoffs in search of their first league title.
Despite the cold weather and snow, nothing has been able to cool off the Wheaton Women's Rugby team as they continue to steamroll their competition in the playoffs. After defeating Mount Holyoke 27-5, the Lyons earned a chance at the league title for the first time in school history. Despite losing to the Crusaders, the Wheaton Lyons still recorded the most dominant and successful season in school history.
Although they are graduating several key players, the Wheaton Women's Rugby team looks primed for another run at the NEWCRC title in 2012. With a strong offense and a swarming, physical defense, the Lyons will enter 2012 with a chip on their shoulders as they look to continue the success of their program.
