Wheaton receives major grant from Mellon Foundation to start national institute for English majors

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the college a grant of more than $400,000 for the first three years of the Summer Institute in Literary and Cultural Studies (SILCS), which aims to increase diversity among college and university faculty members teaching English.

Children's greeting cards sustain after-school program in Tanzania

Ashley Mott '08 and Caitlin O'Connor '08 spent the summer of 2007 helping to expand an established after-school program in Tanzania. Now they are helping to sustain it by selling greeting cards made from the Tanzanian children's artwork.

Sundance selects Wheaton professor's film

Wheaton greenhouses to hold open house

Classics professor produces new 'American' translation of Latin classic

Joel C. Relihan, professor of classics, has produced a new translation of Apuleius's Latin classic, The Golden Ass (Or, A Book of Changes). The project, which took more than a year, resulted in a version of the work that is not only learned but also readable and fun.

Wheaton welcomed 440 new students to campus in August. Nearly 4,000 high school students applied for spots in the Class of 2011--the most applications Wheaton has ever received--and only 39 percent were offered admission.

Greenhouse tour and clinic

The Wheaton College greenhouses are open for tours and repotting clinics four times each academic year. The next open house is scheduled for Monday, October 8, 2007, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wheaton students lend helping hands

One recent Saturday morning 100 first-year Wheaton students spread out to do everything from washing walls and flipping mattresses to cleaning ovens and raking courtyards for residents who welcomed the extra hands. The effort was all a part of the Season of Service sponsored by the Office of Spirituality, Service and Social Responsibility. The work began this month and will continue into October. Students will work with a dozen social service and educational organizations at 25 local sites.
