Wheaton junior wins Beinecke Scholarship
Ashley Smith '08 of Madison, Maine, has been awarded a Beinecke Scholarship to support graduate study of Native American identity in the Northeast. A double major in French and anthropology, Smith was one of 20 college undergraduates chosen for the award from the more than 100 institutions eligible to nominate candidates. (Read more.)

Stitching up support
Women students and staff members came together this semester to create a patchwork quilt in tribute to women of color with HIV/AIDS. During the month of April, the quilt went on traveling exhibition to four grassroots health organizations serving women and families. Ted Nesi '07 caught up with the quilters to hear their story. Barefoot lectures
Fifteen students journeyed over winter break to Belize and Costa Rica, led by professors Scott Shumway and Shawn McCafferty. Together they explored the biology of rainforests and coral reefs for the course "Tropical Field Biology." Lectures and research projects completed the field experience. "I like to refer to the classes as the barefoot lectures," said participant Kara Marquis '08.

Tribute to Virginia Tech
Wheaton students, staff and faculty gathered in Cole Chapel last month to commemorate the individuals who were murdered at Virginia Polytechnic Institute on April 16. During the service, Dean of Students Sue A. Alexander reflected on the tragedy in a moving speech. (Read Dean Sue's remarks.)

ATHLETICS

Game, set, match
Men's tennis standout Payum Payman '07 will compete in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, this month. Payman is one of just 32 singles players nationwide selected to compete, and is Wheaton's first men's tennis player to attend a national championship meet. (Read more.)

Sparkling on the diamond
The Wheaton baseball team heads to Harwich for the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament this week as defending New England champions and the top-seeded team. The action begins on Wednesday, May 16, and the Wheaton games can be viewed via live webcast. (Read more.)
