J.R. Wallace '07 wins Watson Fellowship
Senior Derron J.R. Wallace of Bronx, N.Y., was named by the Thomas J. Watson Foundation as a Watson Fellow for 2007. Wallace will travel abroad to study the historical roots and current practice of the Pentecostal faith tradition among worshippers in Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, Ethiopia, United Kingdom, and Guatemala. Fulbrights for five
Five Wheaton students have received Fulbright scholarships to spend a post-graduate year studying and teaching in the United States and abroad. The Fulbright scholars are: Laura Burr '07, Shanita Gopie '07, Rose Maizner '06, Sarata Toriola '07 and Laura Tschop '07. (Click on a name to read more.)
Student peace projects win grants
Three Wheaton students have won two $10,000 grants to promote world peace through summer projects funded by the Kathryn Wasserman Davis 100 Projects for Peace initiative. Davis has funded the $1 million initiative in celebration of her 100th birthday. (Read more.)
Wheaton students share art expertise
Two Wheaton students recently had the chance to give gallery talks at Boston's venerable Museum of Fine Arts. Skye Monson '07 and Alicia LaTores '09 told museum visitors about the history and significance of two pieces in a current exhibition, "Donatello to Giambologna: Italian Renaissance Sculpture," which runs through July. Exploring Enceladus
A new study by Associate Professor of Geology Geoffrey Collins and co-investigator Jason Goodman suggests there may be a sea of water trapped beneath the icy surface of Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. Collins and Goodman will soon publish a paper on their study in the international journal Icarus, and Collins was recently interviewed about it for the online program Planetary Radio. "Just about anywhere on Earth where you find liquid water, you find life," Collins points out. "There may be liquid water on Enceladus, but the question is, is there anything to eat?" Members of the Wheaton community created 3,218 paper cranes, one for every U.S. soldier killed in the Iraq War, to mark the fourth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of that country. (View photo.)
ATHLETICS
NCAA spotlight on Wheaton
The NCAA visited Wheaton this week as part of a tour of selected New England campuses. The association presents an up-close look at Wheaton's athletics and academic programs in its official blog, "Double-A Zone," which includes a video interview with President Ronald Crutcher. (Check it out online.)
