Campus News and Events

A celebration of community
Under a Wheaton blue sky, the college welcomed more than a thousand guests to campus on April 16 to celebrate the inauguration of President Ronald A. Crutcher. The inaugural weekend began with Academic Festival—Wheaton's annual showcase of student work—and featured a symposium on diversity as an educational asset. In his inaugural speech, the president underlined the importance of character and community in his own life and the life of Wheaton. Visit our inauguration web pages to see photos, view archived webcasts of the ceremony and the symposium, and read the president's address.

A banner year for Wheaton students
Wheaton has produced 18 national scholars in 2005, including a Rhodes Scholar and two Watson Scholars. These winners represent a range of disciplines and aspire to study myriad topics—from conflict resolution to the use of electronic drums in world music to the plight of aging dairy farmers in Europe. Some will study law, others will teach English abroad, while still others will engage in independent research projects. Meet these outstanding scholars here.

Romp and circumstance
Continuing a tradition begun in 1998, this year's senior honors students paraded around the Dimple on May 16 attired in all manner of finery and accompanied by faculty and friends. Amid confetti, soap bubbles and a bugle's blare, the scholars marched triumphantly to the Registrar's Office to deliver their completed theses. (View photos.)

Helping hands
Torrential rain did not deter the students and alumnae/i who volunteered on April 2 at Handi Kids, Inc., a recreation center in Bridgewater serving young people with physical and cognitive challenges. The Wheaton volunteers simply moved indoors—and pitched in to spruce up the stalls and arena for the center's therapeutic horseback riding program. The annual service day was sponsored by the Student Alumnae/i Council (SAC) and the Office of Alumnae/i Relations & Annual Giving. (See photos of the day. )
