Focus on early childhood
Research indicates that the years from birth through age five are crucial to a child's later success in school and healthy social development. Associate Professor of Education Vicki Bartolini has been asked to serve on a subcommittee that is part of a statewide effort to improve the quality of early childhood education. The ultimate goal is the formation of a new Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care to focus more attention on the issue. (More)

Talking taxes
Is the U.S. income tax legalized theft, or part of a social contract? That was the question under debate last month when John Miller, the college's Williams Professor of Economics, participated in a live forum titled, "Establishment of the Income Tax, 1913." The public forum in Providence was part of the discussion series Action Speaks: Under Appreciated Days That Changed America, which examines contemporary issues through the lens of lesser-known but pivotal events of the twentieth century. Later broadcast on Rhode Island's National Public Radio station, WRNI, the program is now archived online.

Artistry in sand
Wheaton was a stop on the world tour of a group of Tibetan monks who demonstrated the ancient art of painting sand mandalas, whose designs are based on sacred text dating back to the time of the Buddha in 600 B.C. (View photograph.)
Athletics
It's snow problem
An early-season snowstorm blanketed the Wheaton soccer fields on Saturday, November 13, postponing the men's and women's NCAA Tournament second-round games by a day. Despite a valiant effort by supporters of the women's team to clear Mirrione Stadium with hand shovels, the game venue was moved to Williamstown. Sunday brought clearer skies and victory to both Wheaton teams, who move on the sectional semifinals November 20. (More)
