Commencement Reunion weekend
A festive mood prevailed as we congratulated the Class of 2004 and welcomed more than 700 alumnae/i back to campus on Commencement Reunion weekend, May 21-23. Keynote speaker Mary Robinson challenged graduates to hold governments accountable for safeguarding human rights worldwide. "Leadership is about bringing others with you," she said, "and each of you will need to rely on your own moral compass on the roadmap of your life.'' (Read transcript.) The college presented honorary degrees to Robinson and outgoing president Dale Rogers Marshall. Revisit the day via our online photo album and our archived webcast of the Commencement exercises.

The big picture
Honors Convocation (May 6) was doubly meaningful this year, as members of the Class of 2004 heard remarks by Professor of Music Carlton Russell and President Dale Marshall, both retiring this year. "When you invest in something beyond yourself, the rewards are immense," Marshall said, addressing the topic "Being Part of a Larger Picture." Russell spoke on the same theme, exhorting the almost-graduates "to sense in the depths of your being the universality of all persons" and "to turn, or continue to turn, your education—your minds and your hearts—toward nothing less than the renewal of the world." (Read their remarks.)

Parade of scholars
Faculty and graduating seniors spoofed academia's most solemn ritual on May 17 with the off-beat display of pomp and circumstance that has become an annual tradition: the thesis parade. Dressed in academic regalia, wigs, costumes and hats, the college's thesis students and their advisors processed around the Dimple to the Registrar's Office to deliver the final copies of the students' honors theses. Take a peek at the revelry via our online photo album.

A global perspective
Wheaton's Center for Global Education reflects the college's commitment to student engagement with the world beyond our campus. Global Dispatch, the center's new newsletter, focuses on study abroad programs, sabbatical and Fulbright experiences, and global dimensions of the Wheaton Curriculum. See the Spring 2004 issue for an article about the course connection "Math in Art and the Art of Math," a pair of courses that examine the relationship between art and mathematics in various cultures and throughout history.

Media Moments

The politics of war
President George Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry are sparring over a war—one that ended almost 30 years ago, in Vietnam. Professor of History and American Studies Alex Bloom was a guest on WBUR's nationally syndicated talk show "The Connection" last month, discussing this new front on the campaign trail. Tune in to hear the archived show.

Athletics

Stars on the fields
The Wheaton softball and women's lacrosse teams enjoyed remarkable seasons this spring, with both teams finishing among the final eight teams in the country in NCAA Tournament play. In softball, the Lyons posted an impressive record of 33-12-1 overall and 14-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), also capturing their third NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament title. (More on Wheaton softball.) The women's lacrosse team racked up its most successful season in program history, boasting an overall record of 15-3. The Lyons posted a seven-game winning streak and captured their second consecutive regular season and NEWMAC tournament championships. (More on women's lacrosse.)

Honoring our best
The Wheaton Athletic Department paid tribute to some of its most outstanding athletes at the annual campus awards banquet last month. Among the honorees were basketball standout Scott Mahan '04 and soccer captain Tracy Prihoda '04, recipients of the Senior Athletic awards. (Read full story.)
