Talkin' Tolkien
On June 3, Associate Professor of English Michael Drout participated in a live online chat with Tolkien devotees and scholars via the Chronicle of Higher Education's "Colloquy Live" series. Drout addressed the allegorical dimensions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, how Tolkien scholars perceive the recent film adaptations of those books, and many other questions. The chat followed publication of the inaugural issue of Tolkien Studies: An Annual Scholarly Review, which Drout co-edits. (Read the chat transcript.)

Annual Fund giving hits record
The final tallies are in! And thanks to your generosity, the Annual Fund has topped its $3 million goal for the 2003-04 academic year. Together, Wheaton's alumnae/i, parents and friends contributed $3,038,096 to the Annual Fund—an all-time record for Wheaton. Your thoughtful gifts support student scholarships and help sustain Wheaton's excellent faculty, campus life and facilities. Thank you!

President's day
The community of Norton honored outgoing President Marshall by declaring Wednesday, June 30, to be Dale Rogers Marshall Day. The selectmen thanked Dale for her contributions to the community during her 12-year tenure, and presented her with a framed print of an 1891 aerial drawing of the college. (Read more.) Wheaton staff and faculty gave the president a grand send-off at a party on the Science Center patio on June 29. (View photos.)

Media Moments

Electronic annals of war
Soldiers on the front lines have always written letters home and kept diaries of their wartime experiences. But more and more, today's military men and women are eschewing paper letters and journals in favor of e-mail and online blogs. What will this trend mean to historians who rely on eye-witness accounts as source material? Will these ephemeral media be preserved? Anni P. Baker, assistant professor of history, was interviewed for a Philadelphia Inquirer article on this subject. (Read the article. Note: Site requires users to complete free registration.)

Movie tourism
Film fans often make pilgrimages to public places where iconic scenes have been set—such as the exterior steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum, which Sylvester Stallone triumphantly mounted in the film "Rocky." Josh Stenger, assistant professor of film studies and literature, was recently quoted in an Associated Press story about this phenomenon. (Read the article.
