Campus News & Events

Unconventional reporting
Karin Seeber '05, editor of the Wheaton Wire, landed a plum assignment this summer: covering the Democratic National Convention in Boston. During the four-day event, Seeber spoke with delegates, shadowed a press officer from convention chairman Bill Richardson's team, and met up with Wheaton students, alumnae/i and faculty. Seeber reported daily from the convention, chronicling her adventures for the Wheaton Web. Read her convention journal here.

Get out the vote
Student activists at Wheaton are encouraging their peers to register to vote in the presidential election by staffing a table in the Balfour-Hood Center on Saturday, August 28, the first day of orientation. Members of the College Democrats and the College Republicans will be on hand to distribute registration materials on that day, or students can register online at Rock the Vote, a Web site devoted to youth voter education. Those wishing to vote absentee in their home states will find it a snap to request a ballot at Declare Yourself, another info-packed Web site for young voters.

Voice of the playwright
Playwright Tony Kushner will deliver the Jane E. Ruby Lecture on Thursday, September 30, at 7 p.m. Wheaton's 2003 production of Kushner's Pulitzer Prizeˆwinning Angels in America (Part One) was directed by Assistant Professor of Theatre Stephanie Burlington '97. Go online to read Burlington's reflections on this ground-breaking play, and to learn more about Kushner's work. Call 508-286-3557 to reserve free tickets to the lecture.

Wheaton Newsmakers

A sophomore with "all the answers"
Crossword creator Michael Doran '07 was the subject of a Boston Globe profile on August 9. New York Times puzzle editor Will Shortz told the Globe's Joseph Kahn that Doran is "right up with the best" of the younger generation of puzzle makers. Doran has created puzzles for the Times, the L.A. Times and the Wheaton Wire. And now ... watch your mailbox for the fall issue of the Wheaton Quarterly, featuring Doran's latest stumper, a Wheaton-themed crossword.

Homespun humor
Elaine Meryl Brown '77 recently published her first novel, Lemon City, which she describes as a "homey" story laced with homespun humor. Set in a fictional black community in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, the mystery story will appeal to readers seeking "total escape from a book," Brown told the New York Daily News in an August 6 article. Brown, whose son David is a sophomore at Wheaton, commented wryly in the article, "I marched with him in my arms when he was 2 to protest it going co-ed." The winter 2005 Wheaton Quarterly will feature an interview with the author.
