2004 Commencement speaker announced
Mary Robinson, who made history as Ireland's first woman president and later served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will address the Class of 2004 at the college's 169th commencement on May 22. ''Mary Robinson exemplifies values of national and international leadership and justice that Wheaton is proud to honor," said President Dale Rogers Marshall in announcing the speaker, who now leads a project called the Ethical Globalization Initiative (EGI). Read more about Robinson on the Wheaton Web and in her biography by John Horgan.
Home sweet home
Wheaton President Dale Rogers Marshall recently tapped into her "inner architect" by creating a gingerbread house to benefit homeless families through the Sweet Home Project, co-sponsored by Boston-based Dancing Deer Baking Company--headed by Trish Karter '77--and the One Family Campaign. Along with the confectionary edifices of over 75 other Boston area luminaries, the presidential homestead is being auctioned off on eBay to help raise a project goal of $100,000. Through December 11, you can view President Marshall's gingerbread house online and place your bid at Dancing Deer. But don't delay.... This sweet deal will soon be going, going, gone.
New plays: the thing
Students enrolled in Assistant Professor Charlotte Meehan's advanced playwriting seminar at Wheaton this year are working on their scripts with guidance from New York City director and dramaturg Julie Balzer, who began a five-month engagement as an Evelyn Danzig Haas '39 Visiting Artist in November. Balzer will follow the plays through into casting and rehearsals, working with the directors and actors as well as the playwrights. Her work will culminate in March with the debut of the students' works at the college's New Plays Festival, a collaboration between the Theatre and English departments. (More)

GIS technology: multilayered learning
Librarians and instructional technology specialists at Wheaton have teamed up with their counterparts at Connecticut College to advance the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology in the classroom. A computer-based system for displaying and analyzing sets of data about a given place, GIS has great potential as a teaching and research tool in many disciplines. (For instance, students of Goldberg Professor of Sociology John Grady have employed GIS to "layer" population and ethnicity data on a map of Greater Boston.) With a grant from the Mellon Foundation via the Center for Educational Technology (CET), the two colleges have collaborated in conducting GIS skill-building workshops for faculty members and IT staff from six liberal arts institutions. Read all about the project in CET's fall 2003 electronic newsletter.

Dynamic duo
Wheaton alums Barbara Pecirep '03 and Zachary Hurd '03, pairing up as the musical duo Stop 186, create a mellow blend of "urban folk" on their new CD, Parallel Lines. Thirteen songs written by Pecirep and Hurd feature the pair on vocals, with Hurd on acoustic guitar. Rooted in the folk tradition, their music borrows elements of hip-hop, rock 'n' roll and R & B.
