Annual Fund: Climbing toward the peak
We've reached the last days of the 2001-2002 Annual Fund--but we haven't yet reached our goal. In fact, we're $382,514 short as of June 17. Our percent participation now stands at 33, also shy of our 42 percent goal.

We're nearly out of time, but our determination to support Wheaton's mission remains. Please help. This year's Annual Fund closes its books on June 30, 2002. Make a gift by going to OnLyon, the Web site for alumnae/i.

Why style matters and pedagogy still counts
Education professor Frinde Maher talks about testing, whether teachers are born or made, and the general public's greatest misunderstanding about what makes a great teacher.

"A problem with the position of teachers today is this combination of being blamed and not being listened to," Maher says. "We're the professionals in the field. It's like saying to doctors, 'You have a special interest in how to deliver health care, and therefore we're not going to listen to you,'" Maher says, explaining her frustration with the politics of public education.

Seeing stars: alumna writes monthly astronomy column
Wheaton Observatory Director Lori Agan '98 writes a monthly column for the Attleboro Sun Chronicle describing when you can catch a glimpse of your favorite stars, planets and other celestial wonders. In June, see the Summer Triangle:

Summer's return is marked by the grouping of stars known as the Summer Triangle. Three stars, each within a separate constellation, join to form a large "asterism", a grouping not recognized as a formal constellation. The best known of these formations is the Big Dipper, which is an asterism within the constellation of Ursa Major. The Summer Triangle, however, is visible only in the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, so its presence in our skies reminds us of the passing seasons.
