Wheaton receives grant for new molecular biology lab
With the hiring of a new molecular biologist and the establishment of a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab, Wheaton biology students now have increased opportunity for cutting-edge research and learning in the areas of molecular biology, biotechnology and genetics. (more)
Arts dedication
A new era in the arts at Wheaton began with the opening of the renovated Watson Fine Arts and the new Mars Arts and Humanities buildings. The college community celebrated by dedicating these new spaces during Homecoming weekend. (more)
On human rights and terror
Ruby lecturer Michael Ignatieff combines eyewitness accounts of modern war with a historian's insight into the constancy of human conflict. Listen to the Harvard professor deliver a Jane E. Ruby Lecture in the Humanities at Wheaton. The lecture is one of the cultural programs that Wheaton is delivering to alumnae/i, parents and friends over the Web through the WGBH Network Forum. Preview of poetry collection
False Horizon is the title for the new book of poems forthcoming from Sue Standing, professor of English and director of Wheaton's creative writing program. Readers of The Atlantic Monthly are getting an advance look at one of the pieces slated for the book. Standing's poem, Hummingbird, is featured in the magazine's November issue. You can read it online or have Professor Standing read it to you. (more)
Historical perspective
The 2002 election has been hailed as a victory for President Bush that reverses historical trends, but Professor of History Alex Bloom says such assessments may be overblown. The 2000 presidential race was anything but typical, notes Bloom, thus this year's midterm election cannot be measured by the usual yardstick. (more)
Athletics
First-time regional champions
Wheaton women's soccer won the NCAA Division III New England regional championship, the program's first regional tournament victory. Advancing to the "Elite Eight" national quarterfinal round, Wheaton battled William Smith College for 90 minutes with no score, then lost in an overtime heartbreaker, 5-4 in penalty kicks. The games begin
Winter may be a few weeks away still, but winter sports teams are getting into action. Men's and women's basketball tipped off their seasons last Friday; the swimming and diving teams are already several meets into their season.
