Wheaton class earns environmental protection recognition
Students and faculty in Wheaton's "Ponds to Particles" course have received the prestigious "Green Seal" awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The award recognizes their contributions to the protection of southeastern Massachusett's Ten Mile River and Taunton River Watershed.

"Ponds to Particles," a course designed especially for education minors, challenges students to discover the thrill of exploration for themselves. The course casts future teachers in the role of scientists, investigating water quality and energy issues in southern New England. To learn more about it, and their award-winning work, click here.

Vespers and luminaria light the holiday season
The Wind Symphony's winter concert and the annual Vespers program welcomed the holiday season on Sunday, Dec. 8. Hundreds of luminaria lit the campus while instruments and voices soared in Cole Memorial Chapel. Click here for a virtual Vespers concert.

A new book by J.R.R. Tolkien
Even before J.R.R. Tolkien invented Hobbits, Ringwraiths and Gollum, he was one of the century's great scholars of medieval English. In 1936 Tolkien wrote a ground-breaking essay on Beowulf that established the Anglo-Saxon poem was one of the great works of English literature.

Tolkien drew this famous essay from a book of Beowulf criticism he began writing in the 1930s but never published. Tolkien's estate allowed Assistant Professor of English Mike Drout to edit the book, Beowulf and the Critics, which was published this month, nearly 30 years after the author's death.

For more on Professor Michael Drout's scholarship on Beowulf and "Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien, read this recent Christian Science Monitor article.
