WHEATON WINS $250K MELLON GRANT
Wheaton has received a $250,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York to help the college implement its new curriculum. The new curriculum, passed by the faculty last December after a two-year comprehensive review, emphasizes critical foundations of knowledge and connections across traditional disciplinary boundaries..(more)

TRIP TAKES SENIORS, ART HISTORY PROFESSOR TO FRANCE'S GOTHIC MONUMENTS
As part of the senior seminar, The Art of the Gothic Age, seven Wheaton College seniors spent spring break 2002 in France. They touched the stone work and gazed up at cathedral spires that they had only read about before.

Luckily, they returned with great photos to share with armchair-travelers back home. (more)

WATSON FINE ARTS COMPLETES NEW CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Watson Fine Arts reopened this year, after a three-year , $20 million renovation project that also included Mars Arts and Humanities. Watson now houses the college's music, theatre and art history programs, as well as community arts organizations and ensembles, such as the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Symphony.

INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT FEATURED ON WHEATON'S HOMEPAGE
A new, interactive exhibit, featured on the college's homepage, tells the stories of a Wheaton student, a recent grad living abroad and two professors. Learn how their lives and academic endeavors intersect with the college community, the city of Boston and the world. (Note: You must have Flash 5 or higher to view the exhibit; you can download the free software from the exhibit's introduction.) Just click on the image in the middle of the homepage--and away you go.

SHAKESPEARE'S TALE OF TRANSFORMATION COMES TO WHEATON
Join Puck, Bottom and company for a classic comic ride through bush and briar in William Shakespeare's magical and maddening night in the moonlit woods, April 18-20 and April 25-27. Directed by Associate Professor of Theatre, David Fox, A Midsummer Night's Dream will be performed Thursday, Friday & Saturday evening, April 18, 19 & 20, 25, 26 & 27 at 7:30 p.m. The special opening night performance on April 18 will begin at 8 p.m. (more)

PROFESSOR'S OP-ED BLASTS BUSH'S LITERACY PLAN
President Bush recently announced a new initiative aimed at helping Head Start kids become better readers. In response, Assistant Professor of Education Mary Lee Griffin wrote an opinion piece, now published:

As a reading professional I was distressed, but not surprised at Bush's recent pronouncements concerning Head Start pre-reading skills. Since this presidency has consistently emphasized phonics as the panacea for the nation's reading problems this latest emphasis on letter recognition for preschoolers, is not surprising. My question would be why? (more)

Athletics

WHEATON RANKS HIGH IN SEARS CUP STANDINGS

Wheaton College, which earned its highest final ranking in the NCAA Division III Sears Directors' Cup championship of 23rd a year ago, is currently ranked 14th overall and second in New England following the first set of winter standings. The program is presented by the nation's athletics directors. (more)
