Campaign for Wheaton enters final four weeks
May 30, 2000
The Campaign for Wheaton, the most ambitious and most successful fundraising effort in the college's history, is racing toward its final deadline of June 30, 2000, with numerous gifts still coming in. The current total for the campaign stands at over $87 million, far exceeding the $65 million target set by the college in 1995.
Wheaton president Dale Rogers Marshall said, "The success of the campaign so far is wonderful testimony not only to the quality of Wheaton's academic programs, but also to the generosity of those who have lent their support in this remarkable effort."
With four weeks left, the Campaign and its supporters are focused on two priorities: the Annual Fund and fundraising for the renovation and addition to the college's arts center. The Annual Fund goal of $3 million is an increase of $400,000 over last year's Annual Fund. To date, the Annual Fund stands at $2.7 million, which includes a significant increase in alumnae/i participation. The participation increase is credited in large part to a challenge program funded by the Board of Trustees, directed at increasing the participation of alumnae/i from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
The Campaign also is funding the extensive renovation and addition to Wheaton's arts center. Over $16 million has already been raised for the arts center project, with a goal of $ 1.5 million more by June 30.
"More exciting than campaign totals is what these funds make possible for our students," Marshall said. "With a month left in our Campaign, we look forward to completing goals for the Annual Fund and the arts center project, both of which will have considerable impact on the quality of our student experience."
The Campaign for Wheaton has built a new dormitory and a baseball stadium; created sixty new endowed scholarships; established ten endowed faculty chairs; introduced a student loan fund; enlarged various faculty funds; raised new support for academic programs, for the library, and for technology and science equipment.
