Wheaton professor and students receive international recognition for laser research

April 4, 2000

A Wheaton physics professor and two student researchers have published their research on laser crystals in an international periodical, Journal of Luminescence.

Professor Xuesheng Chen and her student collaborators, Timothy Nguyen [base ']00 and Qui Luu [base ']00 did optical studies on new laser crystals, which have important applications in new-type lasers. The students received funding for this research project through a Wheaton Summer Fellowship grant and January Fellowship grants.

''This is an excellent example of faculty/student collaboration at Wheaton,'' Professor Chen reported. ''My student collaborators made great contributions to this research, and they were very excited to see their work being published in an international periodical. The financial support these students received from Wheaton was an important part of making this collaboration successful.''

Professor Chen has spent the 1999-2000 academic year on sabbatical, working as a visiting scientist at Harvard University and at Boston College on a NASA-supported research project. She is also co-editing a book, ''Advances in Energy Transfer Processes,'' to be published later this year. It is a technical book for scientists and researchers in the area of laser/optical materials.

''While I miss my work and my students at Wheaton, I am enjoying concentrating on research for a year. It enables me to interact closely with leading scientists in my field, which in turn helps me to teach the most up-to-date material in my courses,'' Professor Chen said.
