Christian folk artist to perform at Wheaton
February 10, 2000
Contemporary Christian singer and guitarist Bebo Norman will perform at Wheaton College on March 4, along with special guests Andrew Peterson and Justin McRoberts. Organized by the Wheaton Christian Fellowship, this concert is only one of two stops in the New England area for Norman on his spring 2000 concert tour.
Musically, Norman cites folk influences such as James Taylor and Marc Cohn and could be assessed as contemporary folk with a pop edge. ''Most of my songs are very personal,'' says Norman, '' which is the main reason they connect with college-age folks - they're really searching. College is that time in your life where you're released from all you've been raised with up to that point, but you're not yet where you're going to be.''
''His music is heartwarming and genuine,'' says Wheaton Christian Fellowship President Holly Wyman [OE]00 of Fitchburg, Mass., the driving force behind bringing Norman to Wheaton. ''My hope was to help Christian Fellowship members come together and work on a common project. As a group, we also wanted to clear up some of the misunderstandings about Christian music. Some people think only of hymns when they think of Christian music,'' she laughs.
The concert, sponsored by the Wheaton Christian Fellowship and funded in part by Wheaton[base ']s Senate, Programming Council and Venture Fund, will be held in Wheaton[base ']s Cole Chapel on Saturday, March 4 at 8 p.m. Several churches in the local community are also assisting with the event, including the New Testament Baptist Church in Norton, The Free Evangelical Fellowship in Easton and the Community Covenant Church in Rehoboth. Tickets are free for Wheaton students and $10 for the local community. To order tickets call Holly Wyman at 508-286-5318 or email hwyman@wheatonma.edu.
