Free newspapers for students - Wheaton forms partnership with Boston Globe, New York Times
January 27, 2000
This semester, free copies of The Boston Globe and The New York Times will be available, weekdays, to all students in residence and dining halls on campus through a new program, called News to You, launched by Wheaton in partnership with the two newspapers. Delivery is slated to begin on Monday, Feb. 7.
The program will provide new opportunities for students to make connections between academic work and the world beyond campus. Readership of the Times or the Globe has long been a requirement in many classes on campus, and News to You will make it much easier for students. Additionally, easy access to the Globe will help students to take advantage of the many cultural events and resources available in the Boston area.
"Wheaton's liberal arts education strives to prepare students to be in touch with the times," says Wheaton President Dale Rogers Marshall. "With the Times and Globe readily accessible, students will get the advantage of two major newspapers to help keep them current on what's happening in our area, in our country and around the world. That will add to students' ability to make connections between their studies and the wider world."
The college's partnership with the two newspapers will also bring some other benefits to students. For instance, the college will have improved ability to bring speakers from the Times or the Globe to campus for lectures on topics in the news. The partnership will also provide new internship opportunities for students.
