Silent Spring Institute Coordinator to Speak at Wheaton for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Tuesday, October 1999
Wheaton College welcomes Cheryl Osimo, Cape Cod Coordinator of the Silent Spring Institute, who will hold an information session on the impact of the environment on women’s health on October 27 at 7 p.m., in the Holman Room of Mary Lyon Hall. Ms. Osimo will show a fifty-three minute video titled, "Exposure and Environmental Links to Breast Cancer," followed by a discussion of the research and outreach programs of the Silent Spring Institute.
Silent Spring Institute, Inc., a partnership of scientists and citizens concerned about potential environmental links to breast cancer, is named in recognition of Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, whose pioneering work tied the use of pesticides to adverse affects on wildlife. The Institute, in collaboration with researchers from Harvard, Tufts, and Boston University, works to answer questions about the environment and women’s health. The Institute is conducting breast cancer studies on Cape Cod, and in Newton, MA. Ms. Osimo coordinates community outreach events for the Institute, and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. This event, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is free and open to the public.
