Rebuilding New Orleans
Students share their experiences from the Alternative Winter Break Trip on Tuesday, March 30
The 2010 members of the Alternative Winter Break Trip to New Orleans will be sharing their experiences in New Orleans on Tuesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the café, Balfour-Hood Center. The presentation is free and will include live jazz music and traditional New Orleans sweets.
In January, a group of 27 Wheaton students and staff spent a week in New Orleans to assist in post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. They worked to remodel a duplex with the help of Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit organization that provides free home modifications and repairs to low-income Americans.
In order to pay for flights, food, and housing for 27, the group had to raise almost $20,000 in one semester. They were able to fund the trip with financial support from family, the SSSR office and various clubs on campus.
