Swine flu update

April 29, 2009

By now campus community members are aware of the swine influenza outbreak (swine flu) that is a growing national and global health threat. This message is meant to update the Wheaton community on the impact of this disease and offer other important information.

As of Wednesday (4/29/09) the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported more than 100 confirmed disease cases in the U.S. The government of Mexico had confirmed 26 cases with a greater number of suspected cases.

Wheaton students who were studying in Puebla, Mexico, are currently returning home. Dean Alfredo Varela and other Global Center staff members have monitored each student's status and the changing conditions in Mexico. The decision to end this semester's study abroad activities in Mexico was made on Tuesday, due to the closing of schools in the region where the students are located. Arrangements have been made for their return.

Associate Dean of Health and Wellness Craig Andrade has remained in contact with state public health officials, including participating in a conference call hosted by Massachusetts' Public Health Commissioner. This session delivered information on the latest swine flu surveillance and preparedness activities.

The events regarding this outbreak are evolving rapidly. Wheaton's administrators will continue to watch this situation closely and keep the campus community informed of important developments.
