Wheaton celebrates Latino Heritage Month

The Marshall Center for Intercultural Learning and the Latino Student Association have organized a series of social, musical and political events to enrich the celebration of Latino Heritage Month on the Wheaton campus this October.
In addition to a month long book display in the Madeleine Clark Wallace Library, three upcoming events exemplify the diverse ways in which the Wheaton community is supporting Latino Heritage Month and the promotion of Latino culture.
On Tuesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. in the Ellison Lecture Hall, Watson Fine Arts, multicultural motivational speaker, storyteller and poet Bobby Gonzalez will offer another perspective on Christopher Columbus in a discussion called "The Tainos: The Native Americans who discovered Columbus."
On Wednesday, October 10 at 5:30 p.m. in Hindle Auditorium, the director of Centro Presente, Maria Elena Letona, will facilitate a panel on political movements and rights of the Latino community. Centro Presente is a Boston-based organization that helps with social, economic and legal issues of Central American refugees and immigrants.
Latin dance lessons, featuring the salsa, bachata and meringue, will be held in the Balfour-Hood Campus Center Dance Studio on Saturday, October 13 at 5 p.m. Following the lessons, Grupo Fantasia will perform at the Loft, offering an opportunity to show off new moves.
