Sean O'Se, one of Ireland's great tenors, will perform in concert at Cole Memorial Chapel on Saturday, September 29.

The concert, presented by the Wheaton Music Department and the Caroline C. Edwards'70 Master Class in the Visual and Musical Arts Endowed Fund within the Evelyn Danzig Haas'39 Visiting Artists Program, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are required but free of charge and must be reserved in advance by calling the Watson Box Office at 508.286.3575.

The concert will be preceded by a lecture by Brian O'Donovan, host of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH 89.7 beginning at 7 p.m.

Born and raised in West Cork in a family of traditional singers fluent in the Irish language, O'Se arrived in Cork City as a young man and studied classical voice. With this diverse training, he came to the attention of composer Seán O'Riada, who was experimenting with arranging and presenting Irish traditional music on the concert stage.

Seán O'Se became the voice of O Riada's ensemble, which also included Paddy Moloney and other musicians who soon afterward formed the Chieftains, moving Irish music onto the world stage. O'Se's renditions of classic ballads like Carrickfergus are known and loved throughout Ireland and today he continues an active schedule of performing and recording.

O'Se will be accompanied by the popular Boston-area Irish band, Tradition, featuring Sheila Falls-Keohane, violin; Paul Kenneally, banjo, whistle, saxophone, keyboard; Tim Keohane, guitar; Joe Moriarty, drums; Matthew Allen, bass, cittern.
