Presented by the Norman W. Johnson Fund for Mathematics and Computer Science, van Dam's discussion will draw from his research focus in computer graphics and hypermedia, as well as his work with systems for creating and reading electronic books with interactive illustrations for the purpose of teaching and research.

Since joining the Brown University faculty in 1965, van Dam has helped pioneer the computer science department, serving as the first department chairman and first vice president of research. He has co-authored nearly a dozen books and over a hundred papers, and co-founded ACM SIGGRAPH, a group that promotes the generation and dissemination of information on computer graphics and interactive techniques. Professor van Dam is the current chairman of the Rhode Island Governor's Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) and the Technical Advisory Board for Microsoft Research.

The Norman W. Johnson Fund for Mathematics and Computer Science is used at the discretion of the two departments to promote better understanding of, and a greater appreciation for, math and computing in the greater Wheaton Community.
