Wheaton graduate Rose Maizner '06, a psychology major from Holladay, Utah, has won a Fulbright Fellowship to Argentina that will allow her to study how culture influences the immigration and adjustment of Muslim women.
Maizner's research plans grow out of earlier scholarship on the challenges that Muslim women face in immigrating and adjusting to U.S. society. Her project also served as the basis for a presentation at Diversity Challenge 2006, Boston University's annual conference on issues of race and culture, and for an article submitted for publication to the Journal of Muslim Mental Health.
"By expanding my previous research in the U.S., this project will help to ... further understand the ways in which the cultural, political and social milieu of the host country shapes the adjustment process," Maizner wrote in her Fulbright proposal. Argentina has the largest Muslim population in Latin America and Maizner says that the minority has been a source of tension in that country since the early 90s.
A Balfour Scholar, Maizner graduated magna cum laude from Wheaton in May, 2006, having earned Deans List honors throughout her college career. She also was elected to Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology, Phi Kappa, the national honors society; and to Kappa Kappa, the Hispanic Studies honor society.
Maizner's year of study in Argentina will not be her first trip abroad. She spent her junior year abroad in Barcelona, Spain, and then won a Davis International Fellowship from Wheaton to volunteer with the Asociacion IBN BATUTA, which works to fight discrimination and racism against Muslims and celebrate and preserve their culture. Her work for the association included translating documents from Spanish to English, developing cultural projects and assisting in the coordination of a weekly Muslim women's group.
Maizner is one of five Wheaton scholars to receive a Fulbright so far this year. Wheaton's other Fulbright scholars are Laura Burr '07, Shanita Gopie '07, Sarata Toriola '07 and Laura Tschop '07.
