Wheaton students win awards in voice competition

Four Wheaton students won five prizes at the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, Rhode Island division. Our six participants were Caitlin Fahey ’07, soprano, Alexander Grover ’09, baritone, Christopher MacDonald ’10, countertenor, Elizabeth McKay ’08, mezzo-soprano, Melissa Roby ’07, mezzo-soprano, and Jordan Trundy ’10, baritone, on Saturday, March 31.

Four Wheaton students recently won five prizes at the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, Rhode Island division.

The winners were Caitlin Fahey '07, soprano; Alexander Grover '09, baritone; Elizabeth McKay '08, mezzo-soprano; and Melissa Roby '07, mezzo-soprano. Also participating in the competition were Christopher MacDonald '10, countertenor, and Jordan Trundy '10, baritone.

More than 80 students from area colleges, including Providence College, Rhode Island College, University of Rhode Island, Salve Regina, Brown University, participated in the competiton.

"This is an extraordinary accomplishment, given that we are in a highly competitive region," said Ann Sears, professor of music and director of performance. "Kudos to Professor Joanne Mouradjian and her superb students!"

Wheaton students who won awards included Fahey, who won first place in musical theatre and second place in song and aria competition, Grover, placed third in musical theatre; Roby who took third in musical theatre and McKay who won first place in the song and aria festival.

Upcoming performances by Wheaton voice students include two appearances at local arts events. On April 12 McKay and Fahey will appear at aha!, a monthly celebration of arts and culture staged by the galleries, museums and restaurants in historic New Bedford. They will be accompanied on piano by Professor Sears. McKay also will appear in Concerts on the Point, an ongoing chamber music series in Westport, Mass.
