Ashley Mott '08 and Caitlin O'Connor '08 spent the summer of 2007 helping to expand an established after-school program in Tanzania. Now they are helping to sustain it by selling greeting cards made from the Tanzanian children's artwork.

The Wheaton College greenhouses will hold an open house on Friday, Dec. 7 from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m. During the open house, visitors are free to wander around the greenhouses at their leisure and may also bring plants in need of repotting.

Joel C. Relihan, professor of classics, has produced a new translation of Apuleius's Latin classic, The Golden Ass (Or, A Book of Changes). The project, which took more than a year, resulted in a version of the work that is not only learned but also readable and fun.

One recent Saturday morning 100 first-year Wheaton students spread out to do everything from washing walls and flipping mattresses to cleaning ovens and raking courtyards for residents who welcomed the extra hands. The effort was all a part of the Season of Service sponsored by the Office of Spirituality, Service and Social Responsibility. The work began this month and will continue into October. Students will work with a dozen social service and educational organizations at 25 local sites.

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundation has granted the college $200,000 to sustain the Office of Service, Spirituality and Social Responsibility (SSSR), and the Mars Foundation has awarded a $250,000 grant to increase the summer research opportunities available through the Mars Faculty/Student Research Fellowships Program.

A new study by Associate Professor of Geology Geoffrey Collins and his research partner suggests that there is a sea of liquid water trapped beneath the ice on Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. Their paper on the research will be published by the planetary science journal Icarus.
