September 14, 2006
The Department of Theatre Studies and Dance is proud to present Consent to Gravity performed by Island Moving Company on Friday, September 15, 7:30 p.m., in the Weber Theatre of Watson Fine Arts. Tickets are complimentary but must be reserved in advance by calling the Watson Box Office, 508.286.3575.
Island Moving Company is a classically trained contemporary ballet company based in Newport, R.I., which produces new dance works through a collaborative creative process. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen, the Company has, for 23 years, produced and presented dances by a diverse group of choreographers, working with musicians, poets, and visual artists. The Company also works extensively in the schools, interacting with students K-12 in curriculum based movement residencies throughout RI and southeastern Massachusetts. In 2003, the IMC received the Arts and Business Council's Jabez Gorham Award for artistic and organizational excellence.
Consent to Gravity is a 50-minute performance inspired by the work of Frederick Sommer, painter, photographer and creative aesthete, who over the course of 60 years, made a study of musical scores as objects of visual beauty. The piece is an experiment in the adaptability of that process in which musicians, composers, dancers and choreographers work together to create a theatrical production inspired by Sommer's art. The performance will culminate a week-long artist-in-residency program sponsored by the Evelyn Danzig Haas '39 Visiting Artist Program.
