Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss to speak on war and human rights

October 14, 2004

Pulitzer-winning journalists Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss, will lecture as part of the Wheaton College Otis Social Justice Symposium on Human Rights and War. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in Hindle Auditorium.

Reporters for The Toledo Blade, Sallah and Weiss received the Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting for their influential series, "Buried Secrets, Brutal Truths," earlier this year. The reporters, along with Joe Mahr, uncovered the brutal story of Tiger Force, a platoon crafted by the military expressly to cause war crimes in Vietnam. This marks the first Pulitzer Prize for the Toledo Blade, located in Toledo, Ohio.

Wheaton College inaugurated the Otis Social Justice Award in 1990. This event brings the college community together to explore issues central to a just society: peace, world hunger, human rights, and the protection of children. The event also honors the women and men who bring members of the community closer to compassionate action. These individuals receive the Otis Social Justice Award, which includes an honorarium that recipients may designate to the cause of their choice. Past recipients of the award have included former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, public school reform advocate Jonathan Kozol and Children's Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman.

Co-sponsored by the Student Government Association and the Wheaton Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, this presentation is part of ≥A Series on Human Rights and War.≈ The presentation will be followed by a reception in the Science Center Lobby.
