Political cartoonist to visit Wheaton for public lecture

September 22, 2004

The Wheaton Non-violent Coordinating Committee will present a lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 28, by political cartoonist, David Rees, the first in a series of talks on ''Human Rights and War.''

The lecture, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., will be held in the Ellison Lecture Hall in the Watson Fine Arts building. The event is free and open to all.

David Rees is the creator of ''Get Your War On,'' an on-line comic strip depicting the sense of dislocation and anxiety that emerged in the days immediately following the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, and as the Bush administration initiated a War on Terrorism.

Rees' ribald, just slightly askew reflections on the post-9/11 world - including the anthrax scare, the Enron scandal, John Ashcroft's preemptive detentions of pre-terrorists, the establishment of the Office for Homeland Security, the Israeli incursions into Gaza and the Palestinian suicide bombings in Tel Aviv, Operation Iraqi Freedom and the search for weapons-of-mass-destruction-related program activities, and the liberation of ''freedom fries'' in the Congressional dining hall - are now run bi-weekly in Rolling Stone magazine, and have been published in two anthologies.

Immediately following the talk and visual presentation, WNCC will be hosting a reception and book signing with the author in the Watson Concourse, just outside Beard Gallery.
