October 22, 2003
The Evelyn Danzig Haas '39 Visiting Artist Program, Worldfest at Wheaton and the Department of Music is proud to present Los Pleneros Del Coco with Miguel Almestica on Thursday, October 30, at 9:00 p.m. in the atrium of Balfour-Hood Center. Be prepared to dance to this lively percussive brew of authentic toe-tapping music from the island of Puerto Rico. More than a dozen master musicians perform a high-spirited, diverse repertoire of spicy Latin rhythms- plena, bomba, salsa, calypso, and jazz Latino, as well as original music.
The Worcester-based group was founded in 1989 by Miguel Alemestica to preserve the traditions of native Puerto Rico. The ensemble has performed at prestigious venues throughout the Northeast, including the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife in Washington D.C., the Lincoln Center Outdoor Summer Series in New York City, and with the multi-city Island Roots and Rhythm Tour produced by the New England Foundation for the Arts. The audience-pleasing ensemble has opened for the Boston Pops and performed for capacity crowds at several First Night Boston celebrations.
The concert is open to the public without charge. Los Pleneros Del Coco featuring Miguel Almestica at Wheaton, Thursday, October 30 from 9:00 to midnight in Balfour Hood Atrium.
