Church-and-Home-in Crisis! Moliere's Tartuffe comes to the Weber Theatre at Wheaton College

April 15, 2003

The Department of Theatre Studies and Dance presents Tartuffe, the French master's classic comedy about a pseudo holy man on the make in an upper middle class household on April 17, 18 & 19 and 24, 25 & 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weber Theatre, Watson Fine Arts,Wheaton College. The play is translated into English verse by Richard Wilbur and is directed by Associate Professor of Theatre, David Fox.

Professor Fox was recently asked to explain the concept for this production, 'I've always wanted to give Tartuffe a contemporary slant and so with this production we've decided to set the play in a very affluent New England backyard, a very lush setting, much like the Garden of Eden, with Tartuffe being the serpent that invades the beautiful garden. Everything we have done with the production thus far is about trying to plug it into our own time and into neighborhoods we all recognize, very protected, and wealthy neighborhoods that feel or believe they are isolated from the rest of the world. Of course this would be the very kind of territory a predator like Tartuffe would want to invade.'

Tickets are $10.00 general admission and $5.00 for students and seniors. To reserve tickets call the Wheaton Ticket Office, 508-286-3575.
