Holcombe M. Austin, Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, died in Colorado on Wednesday, January 8. Professor Austin was an extraordinary and inspirational member of the Wheaton community for 68 years.

Among his many contributions, Austin was instrumental in developing a program of reunion and memorial tree plantings in the 1970s. The new trees replaced many of the original class trees destroyed by hurricanes and disease, and provided needed landscaping around the college's newest buildings. As interest in the often unusual new plantings grew, Austin began the beloved Wheaton Tree Walk in 1974.

Words of condolence may be sent to his wife, Ethelind, and members of his family at:
5172 S. Shalom Park Circle
Aurora, CO 80015

A memorial service in remembrance of Professor Austin's life and accomplishments will be held at Wheaton during Commencement/Reunion Weekend, May 16 -18, 2003. More details will be published when they are available.

Professor Austin's family has decided to establish a Wheaton fund in his name. If you wish to contribute, please send your donation to Wheaton College for the Holcombe Austin Fund, attention to Mary Casey, Director of Development.
