Ponds to Particles class awarded Green Seal by Mass. DEP

January 8, 2003

Students and faculty in Wheaton's ''Ponds to Particles'' course have received the prestigious ''Green Seal,'' awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The award recognizes their contributions to the protection of southeastern Massachusett's Ten Mile River and Taunton River Watershed. Wheaton biology professors Deb Fahey and Kathy Morgan, who worked collaboratively to design the course, accepted the award.

''Ponds to Particles,'' designed especially for education minors, challenges students to discover the thrill of exploration for themselves. The course casts future teachers in the role of scientists, investigating water quality and energy issues in southern New England through extensive fieldwork, community service and a regular schedule of class meetings.
