Wheaton professor decries over-emphasis on phonics

The current push by the federal government to stress phonics in teaching children to read will be good for big business, but not so good for the nation¡Ùs children, according to Assistant Professor of Education Mary Lee Griffin, who is speaking out on the subject in an essay published by the Los Angeles Times.

Muslim Chaplain Imam Talal Eid will speak on ''Islam and Pluralism after 9/11'' on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p. m. in the Holman Room, Mary Lyon Hall. A brief reception with refreshments in the May Room will follow the lecture.
