Class of 2006 set to arrive week of Aug. 26th
It’s official: back to school season is here. Wheaton athletes and student leaders arrive in Norton this week, with 420 first year students arriving for orientation on August 31.
It's official: back to school season is here. Wheaton athletes and student leaders arrive in Norton this week, with 420 first year students arriving for orientation on August 31. After three days of orientation, first-year students and faculty members, including President Dale Rogers Marshall, will participate in Wheaton's annual service day on Sept. 3. Classes begin for all students on September 5.
The 420 members of the Class of 2006 hail from 31 states and 30 foreign countries. They represent the most competitive admission cycle in Wheaton's history with 3,600 candidates competing for these 420 spaces. Their average GPA is a 3.45 and close to half of the class graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
Their talents and abilities outside the classroom are equally impressive: Members of the Class of 2006 have created television shows and founded rock, reggae and ska bands. One student founded a magazine about New York's East Side music scene, and another did independent research on calcium uptake. One student makes jewelry, and another is a nationally published cartoonist. They have volunteered for Congress, NBC Nightly News, Students for a Free Tibet, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Young Judea, the Charles River Water Association, 4-H, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Audubon Society and overseas in Switzerland, Jordan, Costa Rica, Poland, Fiji, New Zealand and Thailand. They have competed in Harvard¢â¡Ás Moot Court, the Junior Olympics, Odyssey of the Mind and a state twirling championship.
One student has sung for New York's Metropolitan Opera, and another has taught therapeutic riding. One woman wrestled on her high school team, mostly against men. They have earned black belts in martial arts, EMT certification, Girl Scout Gold Awards and Eagle Scout Awards. They play cello, flute, melaphone, trumpet, violin, piano, guitar, trombone and baritone sax, they flamenco dance and write software. One student worked as a chef and another as a rescuer on California's search and rescue team. Other students worked for the Armenian Youth Federation, ran their own lobstering business in Maine and worked as a nanny in Switzerland.
