Wheaton launches new Center for Global Education

July 9, 2002

Wheaton's Center for Global Education opens in August with the arrival of Dr. Harvey Charles, the recently appointed dean for global education at Wheaton.

The center, an important part of the college's new curriculum
which stresses connections across disciplines, will emphasize cross-cultural competency for all students. Dr. Charles is charged with developing and coordinating the new vision for global education at Wheaton. The Center for Global Education will bring together Wheaton's current international programs, including Junior Year Abroad and will work with faculty to develop and add programs that will enhance the global perspectives of all Wheaton students. The center will coordinate and grow the dynamic global programs already in place at Wheaton, including the Davis International Fellows program and Worldfest at Wheaton.

Dr. Charles is a nationally known expert on global education, and comes to Wheaton from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he served as director of global programs. His previous appointments in global and international education have been at San Francisco State University and the University of Nevada, Reno. His Ph.D. is from Ohio State University. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Charles will join the Wheaton faculty as associate professor of education.

The center is located in Wheaton's Davis International House on Howard Street, and is made possible through the generous gifts from members of Wheaton's Board of Trustees.
