CLEVELAND, OH- Wheaton College, which earned its highest ranking in the NCAA Division III Sears Directors' Cup two years ago, is currently ranked in a tie for 53rd overall and seventh best in New England through the first standings of the fall competition.

Nine Wheaton College student-athletes have been named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic team for the fall of 2002. Out of the ten member schools, 164 student-athletes received this honor.

Brenda Wyss, associate professor of economics at Wheaton, has been awarded a lecturing and research Fulbright to Jamaica for the spring 2003 semester. Wyss, a political and feminist economist, studies the intersections of gender, family studies and economics, with a particular focus on Jamaica and the Caribbean.

Wheaton has received a grant from the George I. Alden Trust to fund a variety of science equipment priorities. The $75,000 grant supports curricular plans to make the sciences more central to the experience of every Wheaton student and gives Wheaton science faculty tools to illustrate critical connections between the sciences and other disciplines.

Wheaton will host an exhibition of works by noted painters Wolf Kahn & Emily Mason, from Sept. 9 through Oct. 20. The artists, who received honorary degrees from Wheaton in 2000, are the first to be featured in a major exhibition in the Beard and Weil galleries, which opened last spring following a $20 million arts construction and renovation project at Wheaton.

Brooke Bisson '02 and Anna Schultz '02, Wheaton's latest Fulbright scholars, will head to opposite corners of the globe this fall. Bisson, a double major in English literature and music will explore Acadian culture and folk music in Nova Scotia while Schulz, who majored in international relations and political science, will embark on a study of integrated water management practices in Zambia, Africa.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the college nearly $400,000 in grants this spring to help faculty establish a digital imaging facility and to support curriculum transformation across the disciplines.

Wheaton has received a $250,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York to help the college implement its new curriculum. The new curriculum, passed by the faculty last December after a two-year comprehensive review, emphasizes critical foundations of knowledge and connections across traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Grammy-award winning violinist Joshua Bell will perform at Wheaton through the support of Wheaton's Loser Concert Series. The February 5 performance is his only appearance in New England this winter and spring.
