The Wheaton College {Linkto (PageTitled: "Wheaton College: Women's Track: About The Team", WithText: "women's track and field team")} capped a phenomenal year today by winning second place in the NCAA Division III outdoor championships held at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Wheaton won the indoor national track and field championship at Ohio Northern University in February.
On the strength of outstanding performances by each of the nine Wheaton athletes who qualified for the meet, the college finished the competition with 48 points. But the meet’s first place finisher, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania squeaked past Wheaton by just six points. Seventy colleges sent athletes to the competition, which was held over three days.
"Everybody stepped up and performed well in this meet," said Wheaton Head Coach Paul Souza. "We scored points in events in which we didn’t expect to score. Lincoln University has a great team and they put in a great effort today. My hat’s off to them.
"We’re disappointed being second in the nation, but it’s not a bad place to be," said Coach Souza, who is scheduled to return with the team to the Norton campus on Sunday, May 23.
The Wheaton team's feats are particularly remarkable given the relative youth of the track program. Wheaton established women's track and field just five years ago, and have quickly moved to national prominence. During that time, Coach Souza has guided 23 All-Americans and 44 NCAA national meet qualifiers. He was named Northeast Coach of the Year and his conference has twice named him coach of the year.
Because no member of the Wheaton women’s track team graduates this year, the entire squad is expected to return next season, putting the program in a good position to continue their record of strong performance on the national track and field scene.
Wheaton’s results, by event, in final heat competitions.
• Deshawnda Williams finished second in both the 200-meter (24.19) and 400-meter (54.22) dashes.
• Angela Mullins finished fifth in the long jump with an 18-foot, 4.5-inch performance.
• Shimera Daniels notched a third place finish in the triple jump with a 38-foot, 6-inch effort.
• Beth Castagno earned third place in the high jump (5’5.25").
• Tenille Johnson ran third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.24) and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (63.76).
• Wheaton’s 4X400-meter relay team (Williams, Mullins, Jacqui Martinelli and Niara Woods) finished second (3:47.24).
• The 4X100-meter relay team (Williams, Mullins, Johnson and Colleen Burch) finished fifth (47.15).
