How do different systems of music work? Indian classical music doesn't use European-based harmony; it is based instead on melodic forms called ragas and rhythmic cycles known as talas. Ethnomusicology professor Matthew Allen studied dance music of South India with master flutist T. Viswanathan. He and Viswanathan co-authored the book Music in South India, published by Oxford University Press in its Global Music Series in 2004. In connection with his research, Professor Allen teaches a Music and Dance of South Asia course.
