Film Music

Ann SearsAs part of Wheaton's new Film & New Media Studies program, Professor Ann Sears has created a new class devoted to film music called Music, Sound, and the Moving Image.

Students will explore film music from 1895 to the present, asking how film music works, what are its roles in the film, and how technology has shaped the music. They will observe both classic silent era films, like Chaplin's Gold Rush and its famous Table Ballet scene, as well as contemporary films produced by important directors and composers, such as Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann or Steven Spielberg and John Williams.
