Introducing Reading@Wheaton

Posted on August 18, 2010

Monk readingHow do students read?  Is there a “reading culture” at Wheaton?  Do e-books, e-journals, Kindles, iPads, Google Books, Twitter, and texting affect the way we all read?

At a May faculty workshop, Reading in 2010, Professors Paula Krebs, Mary Lee Griffin, and Jason Reiss brought interesting perspectives to bear on the subject of reading at Wheaton. They led a conversation covering several areas of interest including literary vs. non-literary reading, digital texts, multimedia, e-readers, audio books, the neuroscience of attention, the mental processes involved in reading, disciplinary differences in learning how to read effectively, prior knowledge and context in reading, “deep reading” – the list went on and on.

We’d like to extend that conversation this year and involve the entire Wheaton community – students, faculty, and staff. Periodically, we will post a leading question relating to reading in some way. What do you think? What is your experience? What have you read that illuminates the topic? Please join the conversation!  Let us know what questions you'd like us to pose, as well.

Also, take a look at our collaborative readings about reading list, and send us your own recommendations to add. We hope it stimulates interest in further reading on the topic and classroom conversations.
